Associate and Assistant Engineers – City of Tustin

The City of Tustin is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant/Associate Engineer, filled at either level depending on qualifications.

Assistant Engineer:  Assistant Engineer is the entry level classification in the professional engineering series. An employee in this classification performs a full range of routine to complex civil engineering tasks related to the design, development, investigation, construction and maintenance of the City’s public works and water utility infrastructure. The employee initially works under close supervision, though as experience is gained, assignments become more varied, and the employee works with a greater degree of independence. In contrast with the Associate Engineer, an employee in this classification performs the more routine tasks and assignments of the work unit and operates with a lesser degree of independence and responsibility.

Associate Engineer:  Associate Engineer is the journey level classification in the professional engineering series. An employee in this classification performs a full range of routine to complex civil engineering tasks related to the design, development, investigation, construction and maintenance of the City’s public works and water utility infrastructure. An Associate Engineer is fully trained within the scope of duties performed within this classification series and is expected to operate with only occasional instruction or assistance as new situations arise. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Assistant Engineer by the performance of the full range of duties, working with a greater degree of independence, and exercising more judgement and initiative. Associate Engineer is distinguished from the Senior Engineer in that the latter performs the more complex work assigned to the classification series and provides supervision over lower-level professional engineering staff.
