The APWA Southern California Chapter’s recent Public Works Institute (PWI) Module 2 was another tremendous success, bringing together more than 100 students representing over 40 public agencies for three inspiring days of education, professional development, and connection. Participants had the opportunity to learn from industry leaders, share experiences with colleagues from throughout Southern California, and build valuable relationships that will continue long after the classroom sessions have concluded.
“This is what makes the Public Works Institute so special,” said Nicole Jules, PWI Co-Chair. “Bringing together professionals from so many different agencies creates an incredible opportunity to learn from one another, build confidence, and develop the leadership skills that can truly make a difference throughout an entire career.”
This year is particularly meaningful as 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the Public Works Institute in Southern California. The milestone was celebrated with a well-attended PWI Alumni Reunion, reconnecting graduates from throughout the Institute’s history and helping keep the PWI community connected. The reunion provided an especially meaningful opportunity to hear firsthand stories about the lasting impact of the Institute. Alumni shared inspiring experiences about how PWI helped change—and in many cases improve—the trajectory of their careers, providing the knowledge, confidence, professional relationships, and leadership opportunities that helped them take the next step.
“Those stories are the true measure of the Institute’s success,” said Garrett Roberts, PWI Co-Chair. “For 20 years, PWI has brought people together, invested in their professional growth, and helped develop the next generation of public works leaders. Hearing how the program has positively influenced so many careers reminds us just how important this program and its community continue to be.”
Congratulations and thank you to all of the students, instructors, volunteers, alumni, and committee members who contributed to another outstanding Module 2 and to the continued success of the Public Works Institute. The celebration of 20 years of PWI in Southern California continues, and we look forward to welcoming the next group of public works professionals when the next PWI Module is offered in Spring 2027!
